Scitation FAQ

How do SIAM's electronic journals differ from the print editions?

The electronic editions of SIAM's journals are published on an accelerated article-by-article basis. They are the definitive editions for SIAM journals.
Electronic articles in SIAM research journals are published in final form 1-3 months in advance of their print counterparts. Thus, subscribers to the electronic editions can read and reference a growing database of mathematical research before print-only subscribers. (SIAM Review and Theory of Probability and Its Applications have different formats and are not published on an article-by-article basis. These journals are posted electronically approximately 4 weeks before the print issue is mailed.)
INSPEC, Mathematical Reviews, and ISI/Thomson Reuters use the accelerated electronic versions for their coverage of SIAM's journals. MathSciNet and ISI's Web of Science contain links to articles in SIAM Journals Online. [hide answer]

What is available without a subscription?

All users, whether subscribers or not, have unrestricted access to a searchable database of article topmatter (titles, authors, abstracts, key words, AMS subject classifications, and citation information).
Subscribers have access to the full text of SIAM journal articles dated January 1997 forward, available in PDF format. [hide answer]

How do individuals subscribe?

SIAM members have the option of adding electronic access to existing print subscriptions. Electronic-only access to individual journals or to a package of all journals is also available to SIAM members. If you have already renewed and would like to add electronic access, contact customer service. We will send you an assigned user ID and password so that you can activate your individual subscription.
Individuals who are not members of SIAM pay list prices for the journals. Contact customer service to subscribe, indicating the format(s) (electronic, print, or both) in which you would like to receive your journal(s). Consider joining SIAM to take advantage of the low journal prices available to members. [hide answer]

How do I access the full text?

Individual subscriber access is controlled by user ID and password, so your subscription travels with you anywhere there’s an internet connection. After your order is processed you will receive an assigned user ID and password. [hide answer]

Who is allowed to access the full text?

You are the only authorized user of your user ID and password. Any sharing of user IDs and passwords is a violation of the terms and conditions of use. [hide answer]

How much do individual subscriptions cost?

If you are a SIAM individual member and do not wish to subscribe to the print edition of a journal, electronic-only subscriptions are available for $85 each in 2010, a significant savings over the print version. Individual members may also subscribe to an electronic-only package of all journals for $195.00. If you are not a SIAM member and want to subscribe, electronic-only subscriptions are available for 95% of the domestic list price. You may want to consider joining SIAM to take advantage of the low journal prices available to members.
Electronic subscriptions to SIAM journals are also available, upon request, at no additional charge to members who subscribe to the print version (see the price list). [hide answer]

I'm an individual subscriber and I can't access the full text. What should I do?

Individual subscriptions are activated using an assigned user ID and password sent by SIAM after your payment is received and the subscription is processed. Did you receive an assigned user ID and password? Did you activate your subscription?
The user ID and password you chose at activation are case-sensitive. Please doublecheck that you have entered them correctly.
If you still can't access the full text of your subscribed journals, contact customer service and we'll help. [hide answer]

What if I forget my password?

Contact SIAM customer service at service@siam.org. Or go to http://epubs.siam.org/log_in, and click Need help signing in? This page is maintained by Scitation, web host for SIAM Journals Online. Help is also available from Scitation by phoning 1-800-874-6383 or emailing help@scitation.org. [hide answer]

What if I cancel my subscription?

Access to the article database is for the length of the subscription period. There is no access to material after the subscription expires. However, you do have the right to download and store individual articles for future personal use. Systematic downloading of entire issues or large portions of the database is prohibited. [hide answer]

How should the accelerated articles in SIAM Journals Online be cited?

Because the electronic editions of SIAM's research journals (excluding SIAM Review and Theory of Probability and Its Applications) are accelerated, articles may be published in the year before the print version of that issue will be mailed. In addition, papers may be published in the same electronic issue across two years.
When citing SIAM's electronic articles, it's important to remember that SIAM considers the electronic editions to be the definitive editions for its journals. Mathematical Reviews, ISI/Thomson Reuters and INSPEC all use the electronic editions for their coverage of SIAM journals.
Because SIAM journal papers are published in PDF form in electronic volumes and issues that correspond to the later print archive, they are able to be paginated at the time of electronic publication. Thus, our articles can be fully cited with volume, issue, and page numbers.
However, a significant difference that must be taken into account when citing SIAM articles is that the year of publication is the year of electronic publication, not the year in which the print issue mails. For example, here is the correct citation, in SIAM style, for the following article. It was published electronically February 6, 2008, in Volume 19, Issue 1 of SIAM Journal on Optimization, was mailed to print subscribers in February 2009.
MARC E. PFETSCH, Branch-and-Cut for the Maximum Feasible Subsystem Problem, SIAM J. Optim., 19 (2008), pp. 21-38.
Note that the year of publication in this case is 2008, despite the fact that the print issue mailed in 2009.
The year of publication appears as part of the copyright line at the top of each paper, as well as in a footnote to the paper's title, in which the complete date of electronic publication is given.
SIAM print editions state on the front and back covers and on page i: Articles originally published online [month/year] to [month/year].
This situation does not apply to SIAM Review and Theory of Probability and Its Applications since these journals are not produced on a paper-by-paper basis. SIREV, because it contains unique sections, is published electronically as a complete issue some four weeks before the print issue is mailed. TVP is an English-language translation of the Russian journal Teoriya Veroyatnostei i ee Primeneniya. SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences, and SIAM Journal on Financial Mathematics are all-electronic with papers published continuously.
If you have any questions about citing SIAM's accelerated electronic articles, contact SIAM Publisher David Marshall. [hide answer]

How does my institution subscribe to SIAM Journals Online?

Academic and corporate member institutions are sent a membership renewal packet with a price list and the required Online Journals Subscription Agreement (OJSA). If your institution already renewed your print subscriptions(s), ask the librarian to complete and return the OJSA to SIAM so you can get online access quickly.
If you are affiliated with an institution that is not a member of SIAM, and your institution already renewed their SIAM print subscription(s), the librarian needs only tell us or the subscription agent that you want electronic access and complete the OJSA to activate the institution's subscription.
If your institution does not currently subscribe to SIAM journals but would like to, contact customer service to begin your subscription(s) or membership. Once we receive payment and a completed OJSA, we will activate the institution's electronic access.
Note: A completed OJSA and payment must be received before an institution will receive electronic access. Once the OJSA is processed, the institution will have access via IP address. The subscription agreement can be downloaded from SIAM's web site or mailed or faxed to you from SIAM or your subscription agent. [hide answer]

What about ordering electronic subscriptions through subscription agents?

All of our subscription agents are familiar with SIAM’s electronic journals and they all have supplies of our Online Journals Subscription Agreement. The completed OJSA, which is required for electronic access, must come either directly from you or indirectly through a subscription agent.
If you receive your print journal subscriptions through any of the major freight-forwarding or consolidation services that agents provide, please indicate this on the OJSA. [hide answer]

What is the Online Journals Subscription Agreement?

The OJSA details the terms and conditions of electronic access to SIAM journals. Institutions are required to sign and return the OJSA before their electronic subscription will be activated. We have attempted to keep the language simple and understandable and are willing to work with you to set up a mutually agreeable contract. If you already have an OJSA on file with SIAM, there is no need to complete another upon renewal. However, please be sure to contact service@siam.org with any changes or additions to your IP address list. [hide answer]

What is an IP address?

An IP address is the numeric address of a computer connected to the Internet. Every computer using the Internet must have a unique IP address (e.g.,128.92.32.187). But the IP addresses are not assigned randomly. A computer's IP address is based upon the IP address of the local area network through which it is connected. [hide answer]

Are there different levels of network IP addresses?

Yes. Each IP address on the Internet is composed of four sets of numbers, separated by periods. For subscription purposes, SIAM has identified which "classes" of IP addresses are currently acceptable. [hide answer]

What classes of IP addresses are currently acceptable?

Class C is acceptable.
Each "Class C" network can address at most 255 individual computers. A typical Class C number might look like 128.92.37.* Note that the asterisk is a wildcard. The first three parts of the IP address will be the same for all computers on this particular network, so any computer connected to network 128.92.37.* will have an IP address in the range from 128.92.37.1 to 128.92.37.255. There is no need to list each individual machine number; ranges are acceptable (e.g., 128.92.37.20-30).
It is likely that your institution has more than one Class C network. If so, just list the Class C network numbers which you would like to have included on your OJSA. If you need assistance with this, your best option would be to contact an internal network administrator or information systems support group. SIAM is not able to identify the network addresses in use at your institution.

Class B is acceptable.
Larger institutions may prefer to register "Class B" addresses. Each Class B network can address approximately 65,000 individual computers. A typical Class B number might look like 128.92.*.*.
Class B registration is acceptable provided that all subnets are restricted to authorized users (see below). Any subnets that allow unrestricted public access outside the site are not eligible under the OJSA. If a public access subnet's IP address is included in the range of an acceptable address we ask that these specific addresses be identified.

Domain names are not acceptable.
Some institutions may prefer to register their domain name (e.g., university.edu). Unfortunately, SIAM cannot accept domain name registration at this time. [hide answer]

What about proxy servers or redistribution of SIAM materials?

Proxy servers are allowed under our current OJSA provided they serve authorized users only. Therefore, a proxy server that enables public access outside of the defined set of authorized users (as defined in the OJSA and described below) is prohibited. We ask that you identify any proxy servers when completing the OJSA, so that we can track and pass along accurate usage statistics. [hide answer]

How do I complete the IP address section of the OJSA?

Place each IP address, or IP address range, on the line provided in the OJSA, attaching additional pages as necessary. Please make sure you've correctly identified ALL needed IP addresses for your institution. Those on networks not registered will not have access to SIAM journal articles. Be sure to notify service@siam.org with any changes or additions to your IP address list. [hide answer]

Can we download articles from the database?

Yes. Authorized users can:
  – Make searches of subscribed journals
  – Make one hard copy of the output of any search; such copies may be shared with nonauthorized users to the same extent as the print edition, provided such sharing is for the purposes of scholarly communication or educational use and there are no commercial benefits. Authorized users who do print articles must maintain all copyright and other notices on the printed articles.
  – Download search results to hard disk or diskette. Authorized users who do download articles must maintain all copyright and other notices on the articles.

Systematic downloading of entire issues of large portions of the database is prohibited. [hide answer]

Can articles from the database be used in coursepacks?

Yes. Single articles from any SIAM Journals Online issue can be included in coursepacks as long as the SIAM copyright notice is maintained. If an instructor will use the same material repeatedly for the same class, permission fees, payable through the Copyright Clearance Center, may be applicable. [hide answer]

Can articles from the database be put on electronic reserve and/or used for distance learning?

Yes. Single articles from any SIAM Journals Online issue can be put on electronic reserve and/or used for distance learning.
Access must be limited to the students enrolled in the class and to administrative staff as needed. Access must be terminated at the end of the class term. The SIAM copyright notice as well as full citation information for the article must be included.
If an instructor will use the same material repeatedly for the same class, permission fees, payable through the Copyright Clearance Center, may be applicable. [hide answer]

Can articles from the database be used to fulfill interlibrary loan requests?

Yes. Printouts of articles from SIAM Journals Online can be sent via fax or surface mail to fulfill interlibrary loan requests, but the electronic files themselves cannot be sent out. Requests must come from nonprofit institutions such as libraries or schools. Those from commercial, for-profit institutions or individuals may not be filled. The lending institution may not collect a fee for fulfilling such a request beyond that necessary to cover any administrative costs and/or postage. [hide answer]

What is the term of the subscription?

All subscriptions are for the calendar year. A subscription entitles subscribers to one calendar year's access to the electronic journal. [hide answer]

What organizations are linking to SIAM's electronic journals?

Several major abstracting and indexing organizations link to SIAM's full text. Links are in place within MathSciNet, from the American Mathematical Society, and Web of Science, from the Institute for Scientific Information. Other agreements are in place and links are pending. [hide answer]
