Show Abstract
The “decomposition principle” of Dantzig and Wolfe [1] is applied to the solution of the Hitchcock transportation problem and to several generalizations of it. Among these generalizations are (i) the transportation problem in which the source availabilities are subject to general linear constraints, and (ii) the case in which the costs are piecewise linear convex functions. The algorithms developed, while they are of quite general applicability to the problems mentioned, are most efficient when the number of sources is small compared to the number of destinations. Our computational experience is, however, limited to the transportation problem without generalization.

Show Abstract
In this paper we give rigorous a priori error bounds for the eigenvalues computed by a number of techniques based upon orthogonal transformations. In order to give as concise a treatment as possible all the techniques are analyzed in exactly the same way although in some cases marginally better results could be obtained by a different treatment. A bound for the Givens’ process has been obtained previously by Givens [5], though the analysis given here is simpler and the bound somewhat sharper. Bounds for the other techniques have not hitherto been available.
