Some Remarks on the Foundations of Numerical Analysis

Steve Smale

SIAM Rev. 32, pp. 211-220 (10 pages) | Cited 11 times

Online Publication Date: July 18, 2006

Full Text: | Download PDF

Show Abstract
The problem of increasing the understanding of algorithms by considering the foundations of numerical analysis and computer science is considered. The schism between scientific computing and computer science is discussed from a theoretical perspective. These theoretical considerations have an intellectual importance when viewing the computer. In particular, the legitimacy and importance of models of machines that accept real numbers is considered.

Random Number Generators on Vector Supercomputers and Other Advanced Architectures

Stuart L. Anderson

SIAM Rev. 32, pp. 221-251 (31 pages) | Cited 24 times

Online Publication Date: July 18, 2006

Full Text: | Download PDF

Show Abstract
This paper is divided into three parts. The first part surveys the more common techniques for generating and testing uniformly distributed random numbers. The second part considers the efficient generation of random numbers on vector computers. The third part discusses the generation and use of random numbers in multitasking environments (which may include multiple processor computers).

The FFT as a Multigrid Algorithm

William L. Briggs and Van Emden Henson

SIAM Rev. 32, pp. 252-261 (10 pages) | Cited 1 time

Show Abstract
Apart from the fact that they are both ingenious and remarkably efficient, there would appear to be little kinship between fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms and basic multigrid methods. The fast Fourier transform is a powerful direct method for computing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of a sequence of complex numbers, whereas multigrid methods are highly refined iterative methods that can be used to approximate the solution of systems of equations. However, on closer examination, there are features of both algorithms that suggest at least a conceptual similarity. This note is written in a heuristic spirit and is intended to offer a motivation for the FFT that allows it to be viewed as a multigrid process. The outcome of this exercise is certainly not a more efficient FFT algorithm. But hopefully, it will serve to demonstrate the way in which multilevel thinking can be used to interpret algorithms and it may lead the way to new algorithms.

The Role of Critical Exponents in Blowup Theorems

Howard A. Levine

Show Abstract
In this article various extensions of an old result of Fujita are considered for the initial value problem for the reaction-diffusion equation $u_t = \Delta u + u^p $ in $R^N $ with $p > 1$ and nonnegative initial values. Fujita showed that if $1 < p < 1 + {2 / N}$, then the initial value problem had no nontrivial global solutions while if $p > 1 + {2 / N}$, there were nontrivial global solutions. This paper discusses similar results for other geometries and other equations including a nonlinear wave equation and a nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

The Maximum Range of a Projectile in a Vacuum Revisited

Dorothy Browne Shaffer

SIAM Rev. 32, pp. 289-293 (5 pages)

Online Publication Date: July 18, 2006

Full Text: | Download PDF

Show Abstract
This note determines the maximum range of a ballistic missile in a vacuum launched with a given cutoff velocity and height above the earth. The results are based on Keplerian laws for elliptical orbits and some trigonometry. The optimum solution can be characterized by the condition that the launch angle is chosen, so that the sum of the launch and impact angles is the complementary angle to half the angular range on the earth’s surface.

Parametric Feedback Improving Control Systems Efficiency

R. T. Yanushevsky

SIAM Rev. 32, pp. 294-299 (6 pages)

Online Publication Date: July 18, 2006

Full Text: | Download PDF

Show Abstract
A special class of parametric feedback is considered. This feedback makes the system coordinates move inside a certain domain. A link between the parametric feedback under consideration and the one used in variable-structure systems is discussed.
