The SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis features research articles of the highest quality employing innovative analytical techniques to treat problems in the natural sciences. Every paper should have content that is primarily analytical and that employs mathematical methods in such areas as partial differential equations, the calculus of variations, functional analysis, approximation theory, harmonic or wavelet analysis, or dynamical systems. Additionally, every paper relates to a model for natural phenomena in such areas as fluid mechanics, materials science, quantum mechanics, biomathematics, mathematical physics, or to the computational analysis of such phenomena.

From Heterogeneous Microscopic Traffic Flow Models to Macroscopic Models

The goal of this paper is to derive rigorously macroscopic traffic flow models from microscopic models. More precisely, for the microscopic models, we consider follow-the-leader type models with different types of drivers and vehicles which are distributed randomly on the road. After a rescaling, we show that the cumulative distribution function converges to the solution of a macroscopic model. We also establish a connection between this macroscopic model and the so-called Lighthill--Whitham--Richards model.
